The Peace Pole

The Peace Pole was a one-year communal project that engaged children, staff, and parents in a healing process after the tragedy of September 11. With the artist-in-residence, the entire community built the peace pole around four words: friendship, love, sharing, and peace that were translated in every language spoken at the site. Staff and parents made tiles with the words. The children created visual images based on friendship. The Peace Pole stands seven feet tall and is an important schoolyard symbol, reminding us about the importance of friends, family, and community.
